means the
way of the warrior. In the 9th to 12th century Japan, these warriors emerged from the provinces and formed a class among themselves called the Samurai. |
These were fighting men,
skilled in martial arts that had extensive skills in the use of bow and
arrow and the sword. They were also great horsemen. Their loyalty to
the emperor or Shogun was unmatched. They were trustworthy and honest
and lived very frugal lives with no interest in riches and material
things, but rather in honor and pride. They believed that dying in
battle brought honor to their families and to their lord hence, the
Samurai had no fear of death.
Bushido is a code that
the
Samurai used to describe their way of life and beliefs. The seven
Bushido codes are: Justice (Gi), Bravery (Yuu), Benevolence (Jin),
Politeness (Rei), Veracity (Makoto), Honor (Meiyo) and Loyalty (Chuugi).
